It’s never too early to introduce children to a possible career path, so that is exactly what more than 30 professionals volunteered to do during Hilltop Elementary School’s annual Career Day March 4.

The exhibitors were mostly parents, but the members of the community, including the Canfield police and Canfield fire departments also participated.

Exhibitors included realtors, a marketing specialist, a dermatologist, a director of human resources, an endocrinologist, a family practitioner, a clinical scientist and medical technologist, a kitchen designer, a pilot of corporate aviation, a baker, a clinical pharmacist, a paleontologist/museum curator, a hotel manager, an artist/illustrator, an auctioneer, a chief financial officer, an attorney, a nurse, a pharmaceutical sales manager, a correctional officer, a dental hygienist, an accountant/baker, a counselor and an interior designer.

The day was organized by Diane Dankovich, guidance counselor at Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary.

“Career Day is about giving the children an idea of the wide variety of jobs available out there. We want them to know there is a huge range of careers available to them and the children had fun exploring the careers that were presented to them today,” Dankovich said.

Most of the displays were interactive and many exhibitors brought items to help them explain more clearly what their job entails, along with some souvenirs for the children to take home.

For example, Joleen Lewis, a clinical scientist and medical technologist with Community Health Systems, brought a microscope for the students to look at slides of cells, blood, strep throat and dog heartworm.

Dr. Phyllis DeRosa listened to the students’ hearts with a stethoscope and Sue Runion, bakery manager at Canfield Nemenz IGA, demonstrated how to decorate a cake and, to the delight of the students, passed out samples of icing.

Christopher Leeper, artist/illustrator, painted a picture throughout the day to show the children the process of an artist.

Canfield native Heidi Minkler, paleontologist and museum manager, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, volunteered for Career Day at the request of her niece and nephew, who she was visiting. She helped the children excavate a T-Rex fossil with special tools.

This is the 12th year for Career Day at Hilltop Elementary School.
