Jamie Garwood, LPN, was honored as the Employee of the Year for Shepherd of the Valley-Corporate Office/Home Health Care Services at a recent Employee Appreciation luncheon.

“Providing good care is about more than medical care. It also includes care for the heart. Jamie Garwood, one of our home health nurses knows all about caring for the heart,” said Ann Sevenich, associate director of Community Services.

In the fall of 2009, Garwood was assigned the care of an elderly woman in the final stages of a terminal illness. This woman’s dying wish was to give each of her grandchildren a handmade quilt that Christmas.

Knowing how important this was to her, Garwood not only went to the fabric store and bought what was needed from her own resources, she helped begin the quilts and when the woman died, took it upon herself to complete the project.

Shortly before Christmas, Garwood delivered the finished quilts to the family, ensuring that each grandchild will carry the love of their grandmother in their hearts.

The Shepherd Corporate Office Employee of the Year is nominated quarterly and chosen by the corporate and home health staff.

Garwood has been a nurse with Shepherd of the Valley-Home Health Services since March 2009.
