According to Dr. Seuss’s “Cat in the Hat” books, the Cat usually causes delightful mayhem wherever he goes. On a March 2 visit to Lynn Kirk however, the Cat simply reminded the students of how much they love reading and love the books of Dr. Seuss.

Under the red and white striped hat and cat mask was actually second-grade teacher Kristin Havich.

“The kids are always guessing who it is under the costume,” Havich said as she prepared to greet the students. “I haven’t been in class this morning, so I’m sure my kids can figure it out, but I’ve also been the Cat for the last three years now. I’m happy to do it — he’s such a joyful character.”

The students at Lynn Kirk waited patiently in their all-purpose room for the Cat’s arrival, eating a breakfast of green eggs and ham and celebrating what would have been Theodore Seuss Geisel’s 107th birthday.

The Cat in the Hat breakfast was the final celebration during many weeks’ worth of reading-related activities. School literacy coach Shawne Gerst had Seuss being read throughout the school, and sponsored a giveaway of the author’s books to two students in each classroom.

The literacy expert said she is always in awe of Seuss’s eternal appeal.

“Consistently, Dr. Seuss’s books are at the top of everyone’s reading lists,” reflected Gerst. “The world he created manages to stay both timeless and exciting.”

When Havich entered the cafeteria as the Cat in the Hat, she was welcomed with cheers from the students. Troublemakers Thing 1 and Thing 2 didn’t manage to show up at the party with the Cat, but the Lynn Kirk students managed to have an exciting day nonetheless.
