Candidate leaves race for 5th Ward; 7 Dems remain

YOUNGSTOWN

Even with the withdrawal of a candidate, the field for the Youngstown City Council’s 5th Ward Democratic primary still is the most crowded in the Mahoning Valley.

Moses H. Mahdee of Hudson Avenue has withdrawn from the primary. Mahdee couldn’t raise money to run his campaign, according to a Mahoning County Board of Elections employee.

That leaves seven Democrats in the May 3 primary.

They are incumbent Paul Drennen, ex-Councilmen Jerome McNally and Michael R. Rapovy, school board member Anthony J. Catale, ex-state Rep. Sylvester D. Patton Jr., Kevin E.J. Salata and William Dallas.

Republican Plato Kalfas is running unopposed in his party’s primary for the 5th Ward.

The ward includes the southwest side of the city and Cornersburg.
