Boardman orchestra concert is electric

The Boardman Orchestra holds the state record for the longest unbroken string of Superior ratings, from 1973 through the present as well as several trophies from national competitions.

In 2006, the orchestra decided to try something new and different and that continues this year.

Experimentation and innovation have been the hallmark of the Boardman orchestras, and with the increasing popularity and cost effectiveness of electric string instruments through the years, the Boardman orchestra decided to transition students from their traditional acoustic instruments to electric violins, violas, cellos and upright bass.

Mix in an electric guitar, an electric bass, a drum set and a brand new ensemble was born — “Project Mayhem.”

Unlike any other high school orchestra performance local area residents are accustomed to, the Project Mayhem concert includes smoke machines, light displays and all the high-energy movement of a rock concert, complete with musicians moving about on stage.

This year’s set list includes “Smooth,” by Santana, “It’s My Life,” by Bon Jovi, “Welcome Home,” by Coheed and Cambria, “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.

The concert is set for Wednesday at the Boardman Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available the night of the show.
