Leon, Switka lead Penguins over Toledo

Pittsburgh

David Leon went 5-for-5, and starter Robert Switka pitched seven strong innings to lead Youngstown State to a 4-3 victory over Toledo at Pitt’s Panther Classic.

The Penguins (2-12) finished with 12 hits, dropping Toledo to 4-11.

Jeremy Banks got the Penguins going in the top of the eighth with a one-out double off the wall. Joe Iacobucci flied out to center for the second out, and an intentional walk to Jonathan Crist put runners on first and second. Banks took third on a delayed steal, and Armani Johnson brought him in for the winning run on an infield single.

Padraic Williams allowed only a wind-aided single to left in two innings of relief to earn his second save.

Switka, a sophomore from Ursuline, allowed two earned runs on eight hits and one walk in the seven innings to earn his first collegiate victory.

In addition to Leon’s five hits, Drew Dosch and Neil Schroth had two hits apiece. Leon was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. His solo home run in the third tied the score at 1.

The Penguins then took their first lead in the fifth with another two-out hit from Leon. Schroth singled to lead off the inning and advanced on Phil Lipari’s sacrifice. Two batters later, Leon tripled to deep right to plate Schroth.

Toledo scored an unearned run in the sixth, but YSU reclaimed the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. Schroth hit a leadoff triple to right and came home shortly after on Lipari’s sacrifice fly. Toledo tied the score again in the seventh when Hammer scored on Chris Dudics’ two-out single.

Hammer and Delewski had two hits apiece for Toledo.
