Suspect in deaths of kids in Fla. canal in court

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The man police call their only suspect in the deaths of two children found in a South Florida canal waved and smiled to his grandmother in a brief court appearance.

Thirty-four-year-old Clem Beauchamp has not been charged in the children’s deaths. Police say he is also suspected of killing their mother, his ex-girlfriend, though he hasn’t been charged with that either. She was found dead in a landfill last summer.

He’s being held without bail on three unrelated federal gun charges. He appeared in court for a few minutes Friday, telling a judge he still had not secured an attorney.

He appeared happy to see his grandmother, Doris Haynes. Outside court, she said she can’t imagine that he could have killed the children.
