A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted Jerry Smith Sr., 53, of Tremble Avenue, Campbell, in Saturday’s fatal shooting of Tyler Simpson with a firearm specification.
The grand jury also indicted Smith on Thursday on a tampering-with-evidence charge referring to concealment or removal of the firearm in that case.
If convicted, Smith faces a 15-years-to-life prison sentence on the murder charge, a mandatory three consecutive years for the firearm specification and one to five years on the tampering-with-evidence charge.
Smith was jailed under $750,000 bond after he surrendered to police Monday morning.
Simpson, 20, of Dover Street, Warren, was found dead on the sidewalk outside a Kimmel Street home on Youngstown’s East Side just before 6 p.m. Saturday.
A witness told police Simpson was at the residence when an argument broke out among some of the people inside the house, and Smith brandished a handgun and started shooting.
Simpson reportedly went outside, and Smith followed, shooting Simpson once in the abdomen and once in the right side of the face.
