First- second- and third-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School celebrated sportsmanship during the school’s annual Field Day May 25. The students took full advantage of the warm, sunny weather by playing games and running races outside on the playground, including water games. Each grade had an hour and a half to enjoy Field Day.

The day was organized by Hilltop physical education teacher Linda Magyar. The events were planned for the students to enjoy and use some skills they learned in gym class. The teachers assisted Magyar during the races.

“We are promoting sportsmanship among the students and encouraging them to cheer their classmates on. We want to stress cooperation and teamwork. The goal is to have the students try an event and finish it and, of course, to have fun doing it and have a nice time with their friends,” said Magyar.

Activities included a noodle race, a turtle relay, basketball dribble, balancing a ball on a racket relay and balancing a plastic egg on a wooden spoon relay.

The favorite events of the students were a water balloon toss and a koosh ball toss, during which each teacher, standing by a bucket of water, tossed a wet koosh ball to each student, spraying the student with water. The student, in return, tossed the ball back to the teacher, with the chance to splash their teacher, a definite crowd-pleaser.

At the end of each grade’s events, the students were treated to popsicles from the PTO.
