The Canfield Soccer Club celebrated the opening of the new Herbert Road Fields during its annual Players Clinic June 18. The complex consists of eight fields, one for each age group of players.

“This is a big deal for Canfield,” said Brian Governor, vice president of the Canfield Soccer Club Recreational League. “These fields have been years in the making and this is finally it.”

The Players Clinic was for players of all ages in the Recreational League, which consists of 470 registered players, 95 percent of which are from Canfield.

The clinic was run by Phil Simone, Canfield High School boys and girls soccer coach, and approximately 35 of his high school players.

The clinic consisted of 12 stations and the approximately 200 players rotated to each station throughout the clinic. The high school players at each station taught the players basic soccer skills and age-appropriate drills, including Simon Says, Red Light, Green Light, Shark Attack and practicing goal kicks.

The Canfield Soccer Club Recreational League and Competitive League will both use the fields.

“The club now has its own home. We no longer have to use the fields at the fairgrounds or the high school. This will definitely strengthen our program,” Governor said.

The fields are in a township park and the club has an agreement to use and maintain the fields. While the fields are complete, there is still a concern from the club about the lack of a fence around the retention pond near the fields.

“We are concerned about the safety of our players and their families and would feel much better if a fence was provided to prevent any accidents from occurring near or in the pond,” Governor said.

All future events of the Canfield Soccer Club will be held at the new fields.
