For now, Poland forgoes storm-water utility fee

Staff report

POLAND

Village council is not collecting any fees based on the storm-water utility ordinance because a referendum on the ordinance will take place during the November election, Mayor Tim Sicafuse told council at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The mayor’s remarks came in response to concerns expressed by village resident Alfred Massie about street lights, sewer covers and the storm-water utility ordinance.

The ordinance states the monthly storm-water utility fee is $3.50 per one equivalent residential unit, which is 2,500 square feet. Under the ordinance, all homes, regardless of size, are equal to one unit and would pay $42 annually.

Commercial properties are assessed a fee based only on square footage without a cap.

In other business, Clerk-Treasurer Linda Srnec told council that the village, along with all Ohio local governments, has lost its remaining reimbursement for the tangible personal property tax and public utility deregulation, according to the latest information available on the Ohio Department of Taxation’s website.

The village has received $858.47 in reimbursement for the tangible personal property tax this year, and $2,241 for the public utility deregulation. If it does not receive any more as the website indicates, it will be about $6,360 short of what was expected for this year from those two sources, Srnec said.

Also, Councilman Joe Mazur announced that the paving of North Lima Road will begin the first week of August.
