The Youngstown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority recently had a celebration banquet and installation of officers ceremony at The Gentry.

The outgoing president, Marcia Haire-Ellis, passed the gavel to the new chapter president, Gwendolyn Montgomery, at a ceremony conducted by Germaine Bennett.

Haire-Ellis completed two terms at president, from 2007 to 2011. A celebration highlighting the chapter’s programs for the year followed the installation ceremony.

The chapter received a Midwest Regional Award in June at the sorority’s conference in Chicago for its Financial Fortitude program at Williamson Elementary School.

It also was recognized at the conference for collecting more than 1,300 pounds of clothing and toiletries for the recent flood victims in Tennessee.

Other local programs include the Mary McLeod Scholarship program; Delta Academy and Delta G.E.M.S., which provides a mentoring program for girls 11 through 18; Stepping in the Name of Love Health Fair; and voter registration and education at local high schools in Youngstown and Warren.

Delta Sigma Theta is a public service organization founded by 22 young women in 1913 on Howard University campus in Washington, D.C. The sorority’s first public act was to march in the Women’s Suffrage Parade.

Membership has grown to more than 250,000 members internationally.

The sorority’s commitment to service focuses on five areas: educational development, political awareness, economic development, international awareness, and mental and physical health awareness.

The local chapter will celebrate 60 years of service in the Youngstown, Warren and New Castle areas at an upcoming event to be in late September.
