Canfield grad earns honors at Ohio University
Lindsay Lewis, a 2010 Canfield High School graduate, has been inducted into the Ohio University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, the national academic honor society for students who have maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA and are in the top 20 percent of their class during their first year of higher education.
Lewis has achieved Dean’s List each of her three quarters at Ohio and is the recipient of the Ohio University Gateway Scholarship, and Ohio University School of Dance Fine Arts Talent Scholarship. She is double majoring in Special Education and Dance.
She is the daughter of Robert and Shari Lewis of Canfield.

2009 Canfield alum makes Dean’s List at Ohio University
Kendron Taylor has been named to the Dean’s List at Ohio University for the spring quarter.
She is a communications major and a 2009 graduate of Canfield High School. She is the daughter of Tarence and Gia Taylor and the granddaughter of Joseph and Barbera Caruso and Margaret Taylor.
Flea market, craft show open today
The MarketPlace, flea market and craft show will take place at The Shepherd Event Center today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items available include crafts, baked goods, pet items, childrens toys/clothing, household items and more.

Austintown Lube hosts swimsuit contest
Quaker Steak & Lube Æ in Austintown is hosting its first Swim Suit USA International Model Search, Promoting Healthy Lifestyles.
Women can put on their best tasteful swim and night wear and win prizes, including cash and a trip to Las Vegas representing the state of Ohio.
The competition will consist of three preliminary rounds today, July 23 and July 30 starting at 8 p.m. with a different panel of judges each week.
The final round will be Aug. 6. During the final round, most of the judges from the previous weeks will come back to select a lady from the Austintown Quaker Steak & Lube Æ to move on to Canton and maybe ultimately, Las Vegas.

Daughters Revolution elects new officers
The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met June 13 at Ala Cart Catering in Canfield for the special purpose of installing new officers for the 2011-2013 term of office.
The new officers elected May 9 are Regent: Mary Altiere, Vice Regent: Milly Lumley, Chaplain: Priscilla Sutton, Recording Secretary: Rolayne Kasmer, Corresponding Secretary: Barbara Parker, Treasurer: Frances Stoner, Registrar: Nancy Lewis, Librarian/Historian: Bonnie Casto and Board members: Carol Tallman, Sarah Reynolds and Mary Lou Shively.
The chapter meets the second Monday of each month except in January, July and August.
The next meeting will be Sept. 12 at Ala Cart Catering at noon.
Canfield alum graduates with honors
Lindsay Kuhn, a 2007 CHS grad, graduated Summa Cum Laude in International Relations and Communication from Hiram College.
She studied and traveled abroad to South Africa, Greece and Turkey. She interned with the National Council for U.S. Arab Relations in Washington DC, Political Affairs and Communications Intern for Representative Vernon Sykes and is currently working for the Democracy & Government program with International Relief and Development in Washington, DC.
Kuhn ran cross country for Hiram College and was captain of the women’s cross country team her senior year.
She is the daughter of John and Lynn Kuhn.
Car wash to raise funds for youth
St. Michael’s Youth Collaborative is hosting a car wash today from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the church parking lot, 340 N. Broad St., Canfield. The cost is $10 per car and all proceeds benefit the young parishioners fall activities.
Alum graduates with honors
Jessica Barvitski graduated Summa Cum Laude from Otterbein University June 12. She is a Canfield alum and one of more than 500 graduates that day.
CHS alum selected for training program
Alissa Kelty, a 2010 Canfield High School graduate, made two consecutive Dean’s List achievements while attending Slippery Rock University.
Kelty made the Dean’s List for the fall 2010 semester and spring 2011 semester. She was also was chosen as one of only 27 students accepted into the Athletic Training Program.
She is the daughter of Tracy Pflugh of Canfield and John Kelty of Youngstown.
Local student earns scholarship
Canfield’s Dominic Mirto recently became a member of Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society at West Virginia University.
He was also awarded the Gene Corum Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. He is the son of Skip and Kathy Mirto.

The public is invited to the Hike and Splash sponsored by For the Dogs Animal Rescue and Broadview Acres Country Canine Resort from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
Owners should bring their dogs to 419 Salt Springs Road in Lordstown.
There is a registration fee of $15 for the one-mile hike, which starts at 10 a.m. with a dog wash beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Proceeds from the event will continue to help For the Dogs.

Doggie Daze Reunion scheduled
Angels for Animals will host its sixth annual Doggie Daze Reunion and Adopt-A-Thon today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Adoption Center at Angels.
All dogs are welcome and everyone with an Angels dog will receive a special gift bag full of goodies. There will be Rescue Groups, vendors, activities, photos, snacks, raffles and more. The event is free, but $5 donations or a KONG toy for shelter dogs will be accepted.

Melissa Love of Canfield graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - Marketing degree from John Carroll University.

Local student chosen for internship
Daniel Jenkins, a Canfield High School student, has been accepted into the Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy internship program. The internship is offered through the Civic Education Initiatives Office at the Cleveland Clinic.
The application and interview process required academic recommendations, written tests and personal interviews. Jenkins is one of 134 students out of 600 applicants who will participate in the program this summer.
Jenkins wants to pursue a degree in pharmaceutical sciences and become a pharmacist. He is the son of Danny and Kim Jenkins and will be a senior at CHS this fall.
Make a craft after the show
The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host the puppet play Rumplestiltskin July 26 at 10 a.m. After the show children can make a craft.
Student earns high honors
Joy Jakubek, a sophomore in the Mylan School of Pharmacy, has been named to the spring Dean’s List at Duquesne University.
The Dean’s List recognizes full-time students who have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average on a scale of 4.0, with no grade lower than a “C”.
Jakubek is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John and Paula Jakubek of Canfield.
Canfield alum earns high honors
Cadet William Fisher has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at the U.S. Military, at West Point.
Fisher graduated from Canfield High School in 2010 and will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation at West Point. He will spend three weeks abroad completing his Advanced Individual Academic Development and four weeks at West Point for Cadet Field Training. Fisher is also member of the Army Football team and is the son of Becky and Sam Fisher of Canfield.

Church to host outdoor movie nights
Canfield Christian Church is hosting a series of movie nights throughout the next several months.
The scheduled movies and dates are: “The Chronicles of Narnia” (Aug. 19), “Secretariat” (Sept. 16), “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry” (Oct. 21).

Italian Fest scheduled for July
The Italian Fest is set for July 29-31 in downtown Youngstown.
Festivities will begin July 29 at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies, followed by the Miss Italian Youngstown Pageant at 7 p.m. The Miss Italian Youngstown beauty and talent pageant has become a tradition at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest. The pageant includes modeling, speaking about Italian heritage and performing a talent.
There will be continuous entertainment and fun activities, including Morra and a pasta eating contest. A little King and Queen will also be crowned.

Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.
