ST. MARYS, Ohio

Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by an Auglaize County deputy sheriff after a low-speed chase.

They say the pursuit started Friday evening after a caller told officers the driver might have a gun and be planning to shoot himself or someone else. The driver eventually pulled over in St. Marys, got out of his vehicle with a weapon and was shot by a deputy.

WDTN-TV reports the sheriff’s office says the driver, Dennis Slone, 42, of Waynesfield, was a former officer in St. Marys. He died at a hospital.

The deputies involved in the incident have been put on paid administrative leave while officials investigate what happened.

The name of the deputy who shot the driver was not released.
