Strong third period propels Squirts to win


The Youngstown Phantoms Squirt team scored three goals in the final period to pull away for a 4-1 victory over the Amateur Penguins Jan. 22.

The win improved the Squirts record to 4-4-1 in Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League play.

Devin Whitaker (Boardman) led the squad with a hat trick. His first goal came after the quirts fell behind 1-0. Whitaker tied the game at 8:15 of the first with a breakaway goal.

Neither squad scored in the second period, as Phantom defenders Justin Lewis and Keith Smith helped keep the Penguins scoreless. Goalie Nick Beck allowed just the first period goal.

With 10:06 left in the third period, Matthew Baggethun (Boardman) put Youngstown ahead for good with a goal. Whitaker added two goals later in the period to secure the victory and his fourth hat trick of the season.
