BGMS beats Center

Boardman Glenwood’s boys seventh-grade basketball team improved their record to 5-5 with a 30-17 win over Center Jan. 24.

Gavin Dill lead the Spartans defensively with seven steals which helped the Spartans to a 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans were led offensively by Preston Stitt who had 17 points and Devan Cool who contributed eight.

The BGMS eighth-grade boys lost to Center 36-23 Jan. 24.

Benji Roberts led the scoring attack for BGMS with 10 points, while Juan Santiago added seven.

Spartan runners successful at Kent indoor meet

The Boardman boys track team sent a handful of runners to the Kent State University High School Indoor Open Meet on Sunday.

Highlighting the Spartans’ success was junior Devin Campbell who won the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.1 seconds. That time was the best at Kent and qualified Campbell to the Nike Indoor National Meet in New York City in March.

Senior Eddie Adu-Poku placed second in the mile run with a time of 4:40. Junior Allen Starkey placed third in the long jump with a leap of 20-4 1/2.

Boardman boys fall to AMS Red

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys basketball team lost to AMS Red 24-21 on Jan. 18.

Offensively, the Spartans were led by Preston Stitt, who contributed 13 points and Jamison Lyle, who had four.

Boardman’s eighth-grade team fell to AMS Red 50-20. Juan Santiago led the scoring with seven points. Darnell Walton added six, while Preston Wehr and Benji Roberts scored three each.

Boardman girls dominate GlenOak

The Boardman High School freshman girls basketball team defeated GlenOak 46-13 on Jan. 19.

The 12-player team was led by Kelly Tomcsanyi as she had 10 points and seven rebounds. Megan Volosin and Jada Redd each added eight. Kennedy Kesner scored six as she was on the scoring end of two great assists from Mollie Donnelly.

Freshman girls fall to Poland by one

Playing with just six girls, the Boardman freshman team lost 13-12 to Poland on Jan. 20.

Boardman went into halftime trailing 13-9, but managed to stop Poland from scoring for the entire second half to close the gap. Anna Patoray led the Spartans with six points. Taylor Prebble added four and Nikki Negron contributed the final bucket.

Despite best efforts, boys fall to AMS

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys basketball team lost to AMS Blue 31-6 on Jan. 18.

The BGMS eighth-grade boys fell to AMS Blue 33-21 the same day.

BGMS led 15-11 at the half before succumbing to AMS.

Benji Roberts was the leading scorer with five points, while Juan Santiago and Aaren Tompkins added four a piece.

BGMS girls down AMS Blue

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade Spartans won a tough game against a well-coached AMS Blue team on Jan. 18.

Leading the girls to the 28-12 victory were Krista Johnson with 12 points, Natlie Wilson with six, Bailey Brandt with five, Katie Platt with three and Elli Rhitz with two.

The eighth-grade Lady Spartans improved to 5-3 on the year with a convincing 41-14 victory over AMS Blue Jan. 18.

Amanda Lipke led the Spartans with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Fox contributed 13 points, including a three-pointer as the second quarter buzzer sounded. Regan O’Hara and Chaise Perez played strong defense for the Spartans.

BGMS wrestlers split in backyard brawl

The BGMS wrestling team split two matches with the Austintown Middle School Falcons Jan. 19.

The Spartans lost to AMS Red 66-21, but wrestled their best match of the season to beat AMS Blue 72-15.

Arjun Pandya won a tough two-point decision over his Red opponent. Danny Boerio, Nick Patoray, Brandon Rigelsky, Cody Slavens, Matt Valicenti, Tyler Stolar and AJ Yaist all won matches by pin.
