Museum exhibits students’ artwork

The work of local middle- and high-school students competing in the 2011 Regional Scholastic Art Awards, sponsored in part by Akron Children’s Hospital, is on exhibit at Youngstown State University’s McDonough Museum of Art through Feb. 4.

The Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards program is part of the national exhibit sponsored by the educational publishers, Scholastic Inc., New York. The counties eligible to participate in this region are Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula.

Participating in the region this year are 60 art educators from 44 schools with more than 500 works by about 480 area students. Works include paintings, ceramics, drawing, design, digital art, mixed media, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Regional recipients will receive their awards at a ceremony today. Awards given include best of show, gold keys, silver keys and scholarships.

Gold key winners, best of show and gold key portfolio nominees are the sent to New York to compete at the national level. All works are on view at the museum.
