1909: The United States withdraws its forces from Cuba as Jose Miguel Gomez becomes president.

1911: The notorious Hope Diamond is sold by jeweler Pierre Cartier to socialites Edward and Evalyn McLean of Washington, D.C., for $180,000.

1916: Louis D. Brandeis is nominated by President Woodrow Wilson to the Supreme Court; Brandeis becomes the court’s first Jewish member.

1945: During World War II, Allied supplies begin reaching China over the newly reopened Burma Road.

1986: The space shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, killing all seven of its crew members, including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.

1986: John Gay Sr., 54, of Salem wins a fourth of Ohio’s $8 million Lotto jackpot.

The Niles Board of Education gives Superintendent John L. Sittig a new two-year contract, including a $3,000 increase, bringing his salary to $46,000.

1971: James Holloway Jr., 16, leads his mother and seven brothers and sisters to safety after waking up to find the home at 812 Bentley Ave., Niles, on fire. The fire was confined to the living room but there was heavy smoke damage throughout.

The 11th District Court of Appeals releases three Trumbull County commissioners from jail after four hours, but they could find themselves back behind bars if they don’t reach agreement with Probate Judge Reed S. Battin over raises he has ordered for court employees.

1961: A Hubbard Township church leader, James E. Tyson, says he will file false arrest charges against the Mahoning County sheriff after being held overnight in county jail on a case of mistaken identity.

Frank R. Kline is retained as chairman of the Youngstown Park and Recreation Commission for the eighth time.

1936: Ohio State University’s famous Negro athlete, Jesse Owens, is awarded three places on the 1935 All-American track and field tip.

The Rev. Adam Gettman 51, former minister at Grace Evangelical Church, dies of injuries suffered when his car collided with a street car at Mahoning Avenue and Osborne Street.

Mayor Lionel Evans says the Youngstown Police Department is cracking down on bookmakers because the people indicated that they want a crackdown on gamblers.
