Pa. woman traded gas for heroin

Friday, January 28, 2011

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (AP) — A Pittsburgh-area woman must stand trial on charges she used a stolen borough-issued credit card to buy at least $72,000 worth of gasoline that she sold at half price to pay for her heroin habit.

Police in West Mifflin say Dawn Veze, 34, of Munhall, stole the card last year from her ex-boyfriend, who works for the streets department of the borough about five miles east of Pittsburgh.

Police say Veze and an accomplice used the card to steal the gas, and both sold it to buy drugs since April.

Police say the borough employee denied wrongdoing, but told them about Veze when the card was discovered stolen this month.

Mayor Chris Kelly says the borough needs a better system to scrutinize its bills.
