Mom of teen beating victim sues Fla. school board

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The mother of a 16-year-old girl who authorities say was savagely attacked by another student is suing a South Florida school board.

Hilda Gotay, the mother of Josie Lou Ratley, says the Broward County school board failed to provide adequate security and student supervision. Gotay also alleges in the lawsuit filed Thursday that Ratley suffered permanent injuries owing to board negligence.

The suit seeking unspecified damages says Ratley is “permanently and totally disabled.”

A Broward County public schools spokesman declined comment, citing ongoing litigation.

Investigators say Wayne Treacy punched and stomped on Ratley at Deerfield Beach Middle School in March 2010 using steel toe boots. Treacy has been charged as an adult with attempted murder.
