Facility gets grant

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley has received a $25,000 grant from The Youngstown Foundation to help fund renovation costs associated with the opening of the pediatric surgery center on the Beeghly Campus.

The renovated 14,000- square-foot facility provides modern surgical suites, a sterile processing center and an eight-bed post-anesthesia care unit.

Since opening in October 2010, more than 155 surgeries have been performed at the new facility, said JoAnn Stock, director of development for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Money awarded

The Dominion Foundation has awarded $10,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, which provides food to 153 hunger-relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

“Dominion is committed to supporting the communities in which we do business, and we know the need in the Mahoning Valley has increased over the last several years,” said Theresa Bishop, manager of corporate philanthropy at the Dominion Foundation.

Hot line gets grant

YOUNGSTOWN

Help Hotline Crisis Center received a $2,236 grant from The J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation to be used for general operating and document storage.

During December 2010, Help Hotline staff and volunteers answered 14,652 calls, a one-month record since the organization started in 1971. Help Hotline receives an average of 17 calls per day related to suicide.

Open house

FARRELL, PA.

The UPMC Cancer Center at UPMC Horizon, located at the hospital’s Shenango Valley campus, will have a community open house Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will feature a presentation on the center’s technology by Dr. Dwight E. Heron, vice president of radiation oncology at UPMC Shadyside.

The new center broke ground last June and began accepting patients Jan. 3.

Honorary mention

AKRON

Akron Children’s Hospital received an honorary mention award at the International Quality and Productivity Center’s Lean Six Sigma & Process Improvement Summit on Jan. 19 in Orlando, Fla. The award, in the category of “Best Process Improvement Project Under 90 Days,” is for a project that improved the efficiency in scheduling MRIs at the hospital.

Grant received

WARREN/BOARDMAN

The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley received a $10,000 grant from the Youngstown Foundation to be used to upgrade the computer-technology infrastructure of the Red Cross.

The total cost of the project is $24,000, and the Chapter is seeking additional contributions. To help, call the Red Cross at 330-726-6063 or 330-392-2551.

Funds donated

YOUNGSTOWN

Molly Maid of Mahoning/Trumbull Counties, through the Ms. Molly Foundation Chinese Auction, raised almost $3,000 in donations for local domestic-violence shelters in 2010.

Also, along with all Molly Maids, they donated a portion of service fees from homes cleaned during October’s National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“Giving back to the communities we service is a core belief of Molly Maid, and we are passionate about raising awareness for this cause, as nearly one in four women is affected by domestic violence” said Katie Burkey, owner of Molly Maid of Mahoning/Trumbull Counties.
