Barn fire

Low temperatures, ice and snow made for harsh conditions during a barn fire in Green Township.

Green Fire Chief Todd Baird said a barn at 7050 Calla Road caught fire about 3 p.m. Saturday, killing 15 pigs, two calves and a horse. Baird said the barn, owned by his cousin, Matt Baird, was a total loss.

“Upon arrival, flames were shooting out of both ends at the top of the barn,” Baird said. He said crews from Green, Damacus, Beaver, Leetonia and Cardinal Joint Fire District worked for about 90 minutes to extinguish the fire.

“The weather conditions and the size of the structure made it difficult, and the barn collapsed very quickly,” he said. Baird said no one was injured, and the cause is under investigation.
