Officials ID officers killed in Fla. shootout
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A state official has identified the two Florida officers shot and killed in an intense gunfight with a fugitive hiding in his attic.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement that officers Tom Baitinger and Jeffrey Yaslowitz were killed today when law enforcement agents tried to arrest 39-year-old Hydra Lacy Jr. on an aggravated battery charge.
Police believe Lacy opened fire on the agents. Lacy was later found dead in the home following an hours-long standoff that began around 7 a.m.
Also injured was a U.S. marshal. His name has not been released. He was hospitalized in stable condition.
Lacy had a long and violent criminal record including a sexual battery conviction. Court records show Lacy missed his Nov. 1 battery trial.
