AMS Blue wins big over Warren Gold

The Austintown Middle School eighth-grade boys Blue basketball team defeated Warren Gold 61-47 on Jan. 13.

Tommy James led the team in scoring with 20 points.

Patrick Gerberry had 11 points and Derrin Hall added nine. Nathan Shivley scored eight and Gino Rozzi was right behind him with seven points.

Players needed for Heat

The 13U Mahoning Valley HEAT championship team is looking to fill one or two spots on the 2011 roster.

AMS eighth-grade Red girls split two

The eighth-grade Red girls basketball team defeated Warren Gold 24-14 on Jan. 6.

The team was led by Aaliyah Sadler with 15 points.

The Falcons were able to increase the lead in the second half with a complete team defensive effort.

Rebekah Pipe and Ally Theis controlled the boards throughout the game. Mackenzie Scrocco, Sydney Zebrasky, Ashley Hawryluk and Makaila Barbel also played important roles in the defensive effort.

The team lost to Struthers 43-21 on Jan. 13.

The Falcons were led in scoring by the trio of Rebekah Pipe, Andrea Fitzgerald and Aaliyah Sadler with six points each. Mackenzie Scrocco finished up the Falcons’ scoring by adding three points.

Seventh-grade girls win against Warren

The Austintown Middle School seventh-grade girls Blue team beat Warren Gold 39-15 on Jan. 13.

The Falcons were led by Julia Dolak with 14 points.

Indoor track team competes at Akron

The Austintown Fitch boys and girls track and field teams competed at Akron’s Jerome Field’s Open Jan. 15.

Waylan Andrews finished first in the 400-meter dash in 49.94. Ali Tolich was second in the shot put (43-5) and weight throw (46-6 1/2).

The girls 4x200 relay team of Theresa Scott, Jen Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Jenna Yacovone finished third in 1:51.69.

Makayla Martin finished third in the high jump in 5-2. Jay Jakovina finished fourth in the long jump in 20-4.

AMS boys beat Struthers

The Austintown Middle School eighth-grade boys Red team shot 11-for-16 from the free throw line to seal a 44-33 win against Struthers Middle School on Jan. 13.

AMS wrestling teams finding success

The Austintown Middle School Red wrestling team is currently 15-7 on the season, while the Red squad is 2-7. Top wrestlers so far are Angel Cueves (13-4), Desmond Grey (18-6), Anthony Moffo (20-2), Nick Davis (13-6), Justin Goist (19-6), Zach Pugh (18-6), Adam Green (22-3), Tex Martin (12-8), Shane Dillon (14-7) and Jacob Franks (18-7). Green leads the teams with 27 takedowns and 19 pins.

Girls bowlers take second in Columbus

The Austintown Fitch girls varsity bowling team recently competed in the fourth Annual Ohio State Buckeye Classic at HP Lanes in Columbus.

The tournament drew high school teams from all over Ohio to bowl in the college-style bowling tournament. There were 18 girls teams and 32 boys teams. The Fitch girls were runner-up to champion Troy.

Vickie Berquist was the high roller for Fitch with a 204 game and a 552 series, followed by Katie Viglio with 192 (521) and Marietta Gallo had 191 (518).

Lady Falcons tack on another win

The Austintown Fitch Lady Falcons improved to 6-3 with a 67-52 victory over Cardinal Mooney Jan. 5.

Leading the Falcons in scoring were Erica Braxton with 23 points, Megan Sefcik with 20 and Mariah Snowden with 19.

Snowden also had nine steals and Sefcik had six. Cassie Custer led with six rebounds.

Fitch has beaten Mooney, West Branch, Girard, Massillon Jackson, Poland and Chaney. They’ve dropped contests to Canton McKinley, North Canton Hoover and Canfield.

AMS Blue team defeats Youngstown Christian

Austintown’s seventh-grade girls Blue basketball team beat Youngstown Christian 25-15 on Jan. 10.

The game was 10-8 at halftime and AMS put together a strong second half to pull ahead and win the game.

Seven out of the nine players scored.
