Pregnant woman: Boyfriend hit me

YOUNGSTOWN

Police arrested A 17-year-old high school student after officers said he was in the process of beating his pregnant 19-year-old girlfriend.

Reports say officers went to the woman’s Eastway Drive apartment on the East Side at 10:39 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call about a woman screaming. No one answered the door after repeated requests to do so by officers.

The woman, who is six months pregnant and was nursing a swollen face, did answer and told officers her boyfriend, Fabian Ballard of Kendis Circle, had punched her in the face, put her in a wrestling hold and stuffed a sock in her mouth to keep her quiet.

Police found Ballard lying in a bed and placed him under arrest. According to reports, the teen also was wanted in juvenile court for obstruction of official business. Reports say Ballard faces new charges of unlawful restraint, domestic violence and obstruction of official business.

The Austintown school district’s financial reports for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, have been completed and are available for public inspection at the board offices, 700 S. Raccoon Road, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays

Paolone to run for re-election

Reynald “Renny“ Paolone has announced his candidacy for re-election for a fourth term as president of Girard City Council. He has been on council for 18 years, serving as a councilman-at-large and 1st Ward councilman.

Paolone has been a teacher for 32 years, with 18 years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Niles and the last 14 years at Girard High School. At GHS, he teaches social studies and is chairman of the social studies department and head coach of Girard varsity girls softball team.

Paolone is married to the former Brenda Griffiths and is a lifelong city resident.

Self-defense class at Warren YWCA

The YWCA of Warren will host an eight-week basic self-defense workshop, open to the public, for females age 12 and older as part of the YW-Teens and Empowering Women programs.

A free workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. today. Afterward, attendees may sign up for the self-defense program. A photo ID is required for all adult participants.

The classes will be every Monday at the YWCA of Warren beginning Monday and running through March 14. Teen classes are from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Adult classes will be from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m.
