Edward Galaida may not be a name everyone knows. During a presentation and hike at Ford Nature Center on Jan. 9, however, Galaida’s friend and prot g Bill Whitehouse made sure to honor his legacy.
Galaida published the book “Mill Creek Park” in 1941, and it has since become an indispensable resource on the history and geology of the park.
“I have so much gratitude for Ed, and how he influenced my life,” shared Whitehouse. “And I think the best way to honor our friendship is to share his legacy with others.”
Whitehouse shared stories about the troubled first printing of the work, and how the two worked together to sell its importance.
Whitehouse held a first printing of the work in his hands with a personal thanks from Galaida on the first page. After his talk, Whitehouse used the text to hike through the park with the group and read excerpts from Galaida’s work.
Boardman native Joanne Rich joined the hike to explore the park through Galaida’s words.
“I love this park and its amazing history. I’ve been searching in vain for my own first edition of ‘Mill Creek Park,’ and until then, I figured this was the next best thing.”
