Fitch places three wrestlers at Top Gun

The Fitch varsity wrestling team placed three competitors on the awards podium last weekend at the Alliance Top Gun tournament.

The Falcons, who finished among the top 10 teams in 2007 (eighth), 2008 (third) and 2009 (sixth), scored 58.5 points last weekend to take 25th in he team standings.

Jamie Jameson (23-3) finished sixth at 171 pounds to lead Fitch. The junior won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals. After a loss, he won two straight in the consolation bracket. Jameson lost two more matches, falling 8-6 in overtime in his bid to finish fifth. The three losses were his first of the season.

“We knew he’d take a few losses here, but he’s found ‘it’” said Fitch coach Brett Powell. “He’s have a great season so far. Our heavyweight is pretty good, so far, too.”

Fellow junior Lennie McGeachy improved to 18-7 by taking eighth at Top Gun. The junior won his first two bouts - one by pin, the other a 14-8 decision. After a 3-2 loss in the quarters, he went 1-2 in the consolation bracket, losing by pin in the match for seventh place.

Korey Balog finished eighth at 189, falling to eventual champion Huston Evans (St. Paris Graham) in the quarterfinals. After earning victories in the first two matches and falling in the quarters, also went 1-2 in the consolations. He lost 4-0 in the seventh-place match.

In the team title race, St. Paris Graham (286.5) edged Massillon Perry (235) to win the 41-team tournament. CVCA (152.5), Claymont (139) and Olentangy (136.5) rounded out the top five.
