The first-graders learned about making stories with their story gloves, where each finger listed that a story needs things like characters, a setting, and plot. Literacy became a family affair for the first- and third-graders of Dobbins Elementary on Jan. 13, as the school hosted its eighth annual Family Literacy Night.

The project is a particular passion of Dobbins principal Cheryl Borovitcky.

“Literacy is an absolutely indispensable skill. I created the family night because parent support and interest helps bring confidence to the readers. This is my way of helping family become part of the process.”

To entertain both parents and their young readers, each grade had six game and trivia stations that families each spent 15 minutes exploring. The activities explored a specific literacy concept and were fit to the skill level of each grade.

The first-grade stations included demonstrations on storytelling, forming sentences, making words and a story time by Poland librarian Linda Kucilaba. Third-grade stations included a computer activity, word bingo and a lesson on homophones.

Borovitcky’s hope for the event is that the fun would move beyond the halls of her school.

“I want parents and kids to learn literacy skills tonight. I wanted to get some creativity flowing, and I would be thrilled if the activities here become fun that families have at home.”
