Members of the Austintown’s TOPS Club No. 2191 got a jump-start on their New Year’s resolution to shed some pounds. And unlike most people committing to lose weight, these folks are sticking to it.

Since the Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) chapter’s creation in October 2009, members have combined to lose more than 200 pounds, thanks to the support of those in the group.

Kerry Price, leader of the club, works hard to inspire her members with contests, incentives and informational programs, but insists her club’s success is because they are a support system.

“We’ll accept anyone here. We’ve had members who are teenagers, and our oldest in her mid-70s. We’re here to help each other in our goals, whether it is a lot or a little.”

Price and club secretary Shawne Wilfong have shed 50 pounds each.

“Everyone knows what they should be doing,” Wilfong said of her journey. “But actually doing it is the hard part. Our TOPS chapter aims to offer accountability, but not harsh judgement.”

The club has a wealth of advice for others trying to get healthier who may be discouraged.

“Mix it up. Getting bored or burnt out makes it easier to give up,” said Price.

“Make it a lifestyle and not a diet. It’s all about the way you approach it,” added Nancy O’Hara, club treasurer.

TOPS Club No. 2191 started with a clean slate for 2011 and hopes to make it another “losing” year. The club meets Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Wickcliffe Presbyterian Church.
