U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan will serve on the House Budget Committee, his second appointment after losing his seat on the powerful appropriations committee.

Ryan of Niles, D-17th, was appointed to the budget committee Thursday, a day after being selected to serve on the armed- services committee.

Ryan said the combination will provide him with “the opportunity to make sure that the 17th District receives the federal investments necessary to continue moving out of the recession.”

The budget committee establishes federal spending and taxing priorities as well as oversight of the Congressional Budget Office.

The armed services committee oversees defense policies, ongoing military operations, the departments of defense and energy, among other responsibilities.

Ryan lost the appropriations seat because Democrats saw their membership on that committee drop from 37 to 21 when they lost majority control of the House to Republicans.

Ryan was the 23rd-most- senior member on appropriations. After two Democrats leave the committee, Ryan said he’d be returned to appropriations.
