Board rejects mercy for Ohio killer of 3

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio Parole Board has rejected mercy for an Ohio inmate with Nazi sympathies who has spent 27 years on death row for killing three men at Cleveland State University.

Frank Spisak has blamed the 1982 murders on his hatred of gays, blacks and Jews and also claimed his crimes were sparked by mental illness related to confusion about his sexual identity.

More recently he says a jury might have decided differently if it had known of an undiagnosed bipolar mood disorder.

The nine-member board voted unanimously today against clemency for Spisak, saying it’s unlikely the jury would have changed its mind with new information and that Spisak’s crime outweighs any lessening circumstances.

Gov. John Kasich has the final say on mercy for Spisak, who is scheduled to die Feb. 17.
