Ex-Pittsburgh teacher gets prison term for child porn

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A former sixth-grade Pittsburgh Public Schools math teacher has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in federal prison followed by 12 years probation for possessing child pornography on his personal computer and a school-issued laptop.

Daniel Toler, 49, was sentenced today after pleading guilty in June.

Toler’s attorney asked for leniency because Toler had no prior record, and Toler said his actions were an aberration fueled by his divorce.

But U.S. District Judge Terrence McVerry told Toler his conduct “went well beyond the acquisition of child pornography” referring to online chats Toler had with an undercover detective posing as the mother of two children with whom Toler wanted to have sex.

Toler resigned in September 2008, a month after the investigation became public.
