County commissioners to meet with legislators

Staff report

LISBON

County commissioners from nine counties will meet with state legislators to discuss how to deliver services to the public during what one commissioner calls “a period of increasing responsibilities and limited resources.”

Columbiana County Commissioner Penny Traina said Wednesday that, “Recognizing that it will be a tight state budget and there has been limited growth in local revenue, it is essential that state and county governments work together closely and cooperatively for the good of their mutual constituents, the people of Ohio.”

The meeting will involve officials from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Ashtabula, Harrison, Jefferson, Belmont, Carroll, and Tuscarawas counties. It’s not known which legislators will attend.

They will meet at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 28 at Cafe 422 on Youngstown-Warren Road in Warren.

Traina noted that counties are the primary agencies that deal with criminal justice, health and human services, tax collections, improving the infrastructure and economic development. Cuts in state aid to the counties would impact those areas.
