Cleveland police officer shot, suspect killed

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland police have shot and killed a man after a confrontation in which an officer was wounded in the leg.

The shootout began as police investigated a suspicious car early today. The coroner says no immediate identification was made on the alleged gunman.

Police union leader Steve Loomis says nine-year patrolman Anthony Sauto was treated at a hospital and released.

Loomis says the 23-year-old gunman had a semiautomatic weapon hanging like a necklace from his collar.

The wounded officer was at the center of a racially charged incident last year at a nightclub. He later won an apology from a patron when video backed up the officer’s version of a scuffle.
