Salem auditor takes job with state

SALEM

The city will be losing longtime auditor James Armeni who is taking a position with new Ohio Auditor Dave Yost.

Armeni’s last day will be Sunday.

The Republican said he will be working out of the state auditor’s office in Youngstown that covers eight counties, including Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana.

He said he will be dealing with other fiscal officers and handling public relations and any problems.

He said he will not be handling audits.

Armeni became city auditor Jan. 1, 1998. He has been unopposed in elections since then.

Armeni said a position came open at the state auditor’s office and he was asked to submit a resum .

Armeni said that his city pay is $39,200 a year. His state salary will be $52,000 a year.

Armeni said, “I’m real proud of taking [city] finances to a new level.” He often advised council on the state of the city’s revenue.

The auditor’s reports had received numerous state and federal awards.

His assistant, Barb Hasson, will stay on to help with the transition of the new auditor.

David Johnson, the head of the Columbiana County Republican Party, said the party will meet within 30 days from Armeni’s resignation to name a replacement.
