1911: The first landing of an aircraft on a ship takes place as pilot Eugene B. Ely brings his Curtiss biplane in for a safe landing on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Harbor.

1943: During World War II, the Soviets announce they have broken through the long Nazi siege of Leningrad (it is another year before the siege was fully lifted).

A wartime ban on the sale of pre-sliced bread in the U.S. — aimed at reducing bakeries’ demand for metal replacement parts — goes into effect.

1949: Charles Ponzi, engineer of one of the most spectacular swindles in history, dies destitute at a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at age 66.

1991: Financially strapped Eastern Airlines shuts down after more than six decades in business.

1986: Youngstown police fatally wound a man who was cornered in a West Side yard after robbing Bernard’s Auto Parts . Police Chief Randall Wellington says the 19-year-old man was brandishing a loaded pistol, but declines to say whether it was fired.

The first Korean-made car arrives in Portland, Ore., a Hyundai Excel. The subcompact models will sell for between $5,000 and $6,000.

1971: The Hotel Ohio and two other Youngstown liquor permit holders apply for Sunday sales permits.

Elaine Joachim, a sophomore piano major at the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, is selected to play at the Youngstown Symphony’s Family Day concert.

1961: Burglars loot the Liberty Township home of Youngstown attorney Edward W. Powers, making off with $15,000 in cash and jewelry after cracking a small safe.

The city receives 12 complaints from 7th Ward residents about iron ore dust from the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.’s Campbell Works falling on their homes.

1936: Four Democrats are named to the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce’s canal committee, part of an effort to increase activity to win approval of a Lake Erie to Ohio River canal.
