Stepmom of dead, disabled girl faces bigamy charge

NEWTON, N.C. (AP) — The stepmother of a disabled girl who died under mysterious circumstances in North Carolina has been indicted on a charge of bigamy.

The indictment was released Tuesday. It accuses Elisa Baker of having married Zahra Baker’s father when the North Carolina woman was still legally married to another man.

Court documents show Elisa Baker’s marriage to Aaron Young ended in August 2009. The Associated Press has interviewed people who say they attended her marriage ceremony to Adam Baker more than a year before that in Australia.

In North Carolina, bigamy is a low-level felony.

Calls to Baker’s lawyers weren’t immediately returned Tuesday.

Elisa Baker is currently jailed on charges of obstructing the investigation into her stepdaughter’s disappearance last fall.
