Kasich picks 5 to fill school board seats

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich has appointed five new members of the state school board.

The move today by the new Republican governor was made possible last week by the state Senate’s refusal to confirm the selections of former Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat. Republicans control the Senate.

Three more members elected in November also joined the 19-member board today.

Kasich has named C. Todd Jones of New Albany to a term ending Dec. 31, 2012. Jones is president of the Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Ohio, representing private nonprofit institutions.

To terms ending Dec. 31, 2014, Kasich has named Tess Elshoff of New Knoxville; Joseph Farmer of Baltimore; Thomas Gunlock of Centerville; and Dennis Shelton of Delaware.
