Six champs lead Howland to title

HOWLAND

Six wrestlers from Howland High won championships as the host Tigers ran away with the 50th Howland Invitational on Saturday.

Howland scored 199 points to outdistance runner-up Girard with 132 and Rootstown with 113.5 in the 12-team field, which included three “B” teams.

Champions for Howland were J.R. Perry (119 pounds), Gabe Stark (125), Alex Cornicelli (130), Bryce Tricker (160), Chuck Sayre (215) and Cody Reesman (285).

Howland’s Nico Lucarelli (103), Andrew Hamilton (135) and Robbie Klose (145) were runners-up.

Girard was led by champions Josh Barnes (103), Nick Cardiero (112) and Jacob Carpenter (135), while Dan Johntony (125) and Alex Saunders (215) were runners-up.

Salem’s Scott Lodge led his team with a runner-up finish at 140.

Top Gun

ALLIANCE

State power St. Paris Graham edged Massillon Perry in the 41-team Top Gun tournament at Alliance High School.

Graham finished with 286.5 points, while Perry scored 235.

Boardman finished in 19th place with 72.5 points and Austintown Fitch was 25th with 58.5 points.

Leading the Spartans were John Dillon and Nick Mancini. Dillon, a junior, won the 125-pound championship, winning five matches over the two days, including an 8-2 decision of Brodie Scherer of Warsaw River View in the finals.

Mancini, a sophomore, finished fifth at 103.

Fitch was led by junior Jamie Jameson, who finished sixth at 171. Also for the Falcons, juniors Korey Balog and Lennie McGeachy both placed eighth at 189 and 285, respectively.
