Freshman advance in tournament
The Canfield High School freshman girls basketball team beat Beaver Local 42-12 in the first round of the All-American Conference freshman tournament Feb. 17.
Crissy Gelonese led the Cards with 11 points. Paige Bidinotto helped the team by scoring nine points, Jamie Giambattista and Elena Billy each had six points.
Overtime win for Canfield hockey
Bryan Clark knocked in a rebound set up by Nick Carney and Riley Emery at 3:51 in overtime as the Canfield Cardinals hockey team came from behind to beat Aurora 3-2 in the first round of the OHSAA hockey tournament at Kent Feb. 15.
Clark got the Cards on the board in the first period, off an assist from Emery. The Cards surrendered two power play goals in the first to fall behind 2-1.
Emery tied the game at 2-all with just 1:38 left in the third period.
Roger Geiser stopped 19 shots in the net for Canfield (9-18-1).
Canfield soccer teams cited for academics
The Canfield High boys and girls varsity soccer teams were recently accorded All-Ohio academic honors by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA) for their classroom performance.
The boys team finished 16-3 and was district runner-up, while the girls team was 11-5-3.
Both teams are coached by Phil Simone. Joe Fusillo (boys) and Nikki Sorice (girls) are assistants.
Allison Pavlansky wins USTA event
Allison Pavlansky of Canfield won a recent United States Tennis Association tournament, the Paramount Girls Winter Classic. Competing in the girls 16-year-old division, Pavlansky defeated Katlyn Hissong in the semifinals, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, and Jamie Vizelman in the finals, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.
