Rev. Nevels named COGIC bishop-designate

The Rev. Emmitt L. Nevels Sr., who was named bishop-designate of the Ohio West Jurisdiction of the International Churches of God in Christ, will lead a jurisdictional workers meeting Wednesday through March 5 at Nevels Temple COGIC, 939 Elm St.

Services are scheduled for 7 p.m. nightly.

Bishop Nevels has a bachelor’s degree of theology and commendation from the International Seminary, Orlando, Fla. He also studied accounting and religious studies at Youngstown State University.

He became a minister in 1967 and in 1974, he founded Nevels Temple.

He and his wife, Frances, have been married for 51 years. They are the parents of The Nevel Sisters, national Gospel recording artist and Emmitt Nevels Jr,, also a recording artist. They have 10 grandchildren.

The Church of God in Christ is a Pentecostal Christian denomination with a predominantly African-American membership. It has a presence in 60 countries and an international membership of 8.0 million.

In the United States, it has more than 12,500 churches and 6.5 million members, making it the largest Pentecostal church and the fifth- largest Christian church in the nation.

The Ohio West Jurisdiction of the COGIC was born out of Ohio Central Jurisdiction that was divided into East and West. As the leader of the West Jurisdiction, Bishop Nevels oversees 35 churches.
