Black history event returns to Warren today

The 6th Ward Community Coalition Second Annual Black History Month Festival begins at noon today at Christ Our King Church, 1000 Tod Avenue SW.

Keynote speaker will be Jay Williams, Youngstown mayor. The event is free and open to the public.

The following is a schedule of presenters:

Noon: Opening Ceremony

12:15: Poetry reading, Mar’Zhane Blackwell; “I Have A Dream Speech,” Kee-Ohn Johnson

12:30: Multi-Cultural Film Festival presented by Terri Morgan & “Girlz Voices”

12:45: Underground Railroad, Warren councilwoman Helen Rucker

1 p.m.: The Real 7 Principles of Kwanzaa, Tommy Perry

1:15: African-American Firsts in the Mahoning Valley, Robert Saffold

1:30: Black History Trivia Contest

1:45: Singer, Carolyn Scott

2:00: Keynote Speaker, Youngstown mayor Jay Williams

2:30: Salute to the Elders of the 6th Ward. To be honored are Violet Clark, Birdia Stroud and minister Ronald Fowlis. Also African dance performed by Mildred Gilkes and the Drill Team Dancers.

2:45: Singer, minister Ben Hurt; The Importance of Celebrating Juneteenth, Danny Houston

3 p.m.: “Acting Black”, Yusef Johnson

3:30: African-American quilts and crafts, Belinda Johnson

3:45: Singer, Stanley Elkins

4:00: Negro League baseball player Ted Toles

4:45: Story Telling, minister Garrick Matlock
