CANTON

Maplewood senior Jordan Moxley won the 50-yard freestyle at Friday's Division II state swimming meet at Branin Natatorium.

Moxley, who finished second in the event last year, finished in 23.51, which was three-hundredths of a second slower than her Thursday preliminary time but was enough to hold off Gates Mills Gilmour Academy freshman Macie McNichols.

She is the first area girl to win a state swimming title since Poland's Carey Venglarcik in 2001.

In other early finals, McDonald's Katie Joseph finished fourth in the 200 free and Lakeview's Emilee Gysegem was fifth in the 200 IM.

All three swimmers have one more final each.
