SlimDown for Kids

BOARDMAN

Registered dietitians from Humility of Mary Health Partners and fitness instructors from the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA in Boardman are offering a weight- management program for children age 9 to 12. Called SlimDown for Kids, the program provides nutrition counseling and fitness training. Parents/guardians also participate in the program, the goal of which is a healthy outlook on weight and exercise that will last a lifetime.

The program, which runs April 25 to June 2, includes a weekly nutrition and fitness class from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, which parents/guardians also attend. Children have the option of attending additional fitness classes Mondays and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. All classes are at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.

Program at St. Joe’s

WARREN

St. Joseph Health Center’s volunteer department is offering a program of information, enlightenment and fun for people age 55 and older at 2:30 p.m. March 8 in the hospital’s second-floor classrooms. Dr. Carl Fossaceca, clinical pharmacy specialist at St. Joseph, is the speaker. The cost is $4, which includes dinner and door prizes. For reservations, call 330-841-4375 or 330-841-4376 by Tuesday.

Lung Center opens

FARRELL, PA.

UPMC Horizon has provided a one-stop location for patients with pulmonary and thoracic conditions with the opening of the UPMC Horizon Lung Center near its Shenango Valley campus in Primary Health Park Place, 350 Sharon-New Castle Road. The Lung Center incorporates pulmonary medicine and thoracic surgery while offering access to diagnostic services available at the hospital as well as the UPMC Cancer Center at UPMC Horizon, hospital officials said.

The Lung Center offers treatment for conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, emphysema, sleep apnea, lung cancer and esophageal diseases.

Stroke center award

YOUNGSTOWN

After undergoing an onsite evaluation and demonstrating compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care, the Stroke Center at St. Elizabeth Health Center has received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for certification as a primary stroke center.

By achieving such certification, St. Elizabeth Health Center has proved that it has the ability to provide effective, timely care to stroke victims and can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients, said Jean E. Range, executive director of Disease-Specific Care Certification for The Joint Commission.

UPMC scholarship

FARRELL/GREENVILLE, PA.

The trustees of the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Fund are accepting applications from local medical students through April 15. The scholarship is open to students who live in UPMC Horizon’s service area and who have successfully completed the first year of an allopathic or osteopathic medical school.
