Kasich says the state will review gaming

VIENNA — Gov. John Kasich said the state plans to hire a “gambling expert” to review gaming in the state, which would include the possible legalization of slot machines at horse race tracks. Kasich, a Republican, said today that he would not commit to a time frame on the decision on slots. Penn National Gaming Inc. wants to relocate a harness track from Toledo to Austintown. The company would invest $200 million in the township if slots are legalized at tracks.

Kasich said he’s in favor of businesses making money, but “I’m also in favor of taxpayers getting a fair shake.”

He spoke to about 480 people today at a hanger at the Youngstown Regional Airport. The event was sponsored by the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber.

Kasich recognized the approximately 700 protestors who lined state Route 193 near the airport. They were protesting a Republican-sponsored bill that would eliminate collective bargaining for state employees.

Kasich said he understands that they’re “hopping mad,” but he supports the bill because it provides significant financial benefit to the state and taxpayers.
