Hill wins 3-meter dive for Youngstown State

Geneva, OH

Youngstown State sophomore diver Casey Hill won the Horizon League 3-meter diving championship by 0.15 points, freshman Megan Ciampa posted the school’s second-best time in the 1,000 free and both YSU relay squads set records on Wednesday at the Busbey Natatorium.

Hill’s six dive total of 284.20 which barely defeated Kelsey George of Milwaukee who had a 284.05. CSU’s Kacey Cummings placed third with a 279.85.

Hill is the first YSU diver to win a league title since Kalyn Leveto won the one-meter in 2005 and first three-meter winner since 2004, also by Leveto.

Also in the three-meter dive, senior Amanda Carpin was 10th with a 209.75.

Woods knocked out in first round of golf

MARANA, Ariz.

Tiger Woods’ return to the Match Play Championship lasted only one day.

Moments after Woods made a clutch birdie putt on the 18th hole to extend his match Wednesday, he hit a shocking 3-wood into the desert and took two shots to get back into the fairway. He ended up with a double bogey and lost in 19 holes to Thomas Bjorn.

It was only the second time that Woods has lost in the opening round, and he had good company among the top American seeds. Steve Stricker lost to 17-year-old Matteo Manassero, while Jim Furyk was beaten by Ryan Palmer.

Asked what went wrong, Woods said simply, “I blew it.”

Nets acquire Deron Williams in trade

SALT LAKE CITY

The New Jersey Nets finally landed a big-name All-Star in a blockbuster trade that gives them point guard Deron Williams and sends rookie Derrick Favors and point guard Devin Harris to the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz also will receive the Nets’ first-round pick in 2011, which could be a lottery pick, cash, and Golden State’s 2012 first-round draft pick.

“I feel Deron Williams is the best point guard in the NBA,” Nets general manager Billy King said in officially announcing the blockbuster deal Wednesday afternoon.

“I spoke with Deron and he’s excited about it. He understands where we are and where we want to go. In this league, you win with point guards. Jason Kidd turned this franchise around when he came and we feel Deron can do the same thing.”

NCAA hits Tennessee, coaches with violations

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

The NCAA says both Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl and former football coach Lane Kiffin committed recruiting violations and failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance of NCAA rules within their programs.

Following its 22-month investigation of the athletic program, the NCAA notified Tennessee of a dozen rules violations by the coaches, their assistants and the university itself in a letter released by the school on Wednesday. Kiffin, who is now at Southern California, received a separate notice of the allegations against him.

Tennessee’s baseball program was included.

Cardinals’ Wainwright injures right elbow

JUPITER, Fla.

Adam Wainwright, a 20-game winner for the Cardinals a year ago and the runner-up for the Cy Young award, was being sent back to St. Louis on Wednesday for tests on his injured right elbow amid concern that he could be lost for the season.

General manager John Mozeliak said “things do not look encouraging” for the right-hander, who injured his elbow during Monday’s bullpen session.

Mozeliak stopped short of saying Wainwright would need Tommy John surgery.
