Brother of NY gunman died in ’07 Mass. shootout

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a New York man who fatally shot his wife and a police officer last week had a brother who was killed in a shootout with Massachusetts police four years ago.

Police in Springfield, Mass., tell the Poughkeepsie Journal that 28-year-old Aaron Brevoort was shot after he opened fire on police trying to serve him with a warrant. A Springfield officer was wounded in the leg during the March 13, 2007, shootout.

The Journal reports that Brevoort was the brother of 27-year-old Lee Welch. Authorities say Welch killed his wife and Poughkeepsie police officer John Falcone on Friday before turning a gun on himself.

The officer’s funeral is Thursday.
