Valley food bank is national winner

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley won a competition with other Feeding America food banks nationwide to take first place in collecting Hunger Action Month pledges and a won a truckload of Oscar Mayer food.

The product is scheduled to arrive at the food bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

More than 2,400 Mahoning Valley residents pledged to take a stand against hunger through advocacy, volunteering and food and financial contributions. The winning food bank was selected by dividing the number of people in a food bank’s service area who took the pledge by the number of residents.

“Ranking No. 1 in the country truly shows the dedication and compassion of Valley residents to ensure that there is food available to those in need in our community,” said Michael Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest.

Festivities to mark courthouse’s 100th

The centennial of the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St., will be observed at 12:30 p.m. March 4 in its rotunda.

The observance is sponsored by the county bar association, the county commissioners, the county common pleas court judges and Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

A time capsule that was installed at the building’s June 11, 1908, cornerstone-laying ceremony will be opened, and William Lawson, historical society executive director, will give a presentation concerning the history of the landmark building.

Membership open to Korean War vets

Korean War Veterans Chapter 137 of Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, invites all veterans who served in Korea from June 27, 1950, to the present to consider becoming a member of the chapter.
