Struthers experiences a rash of car break-ins over 24-hour period

Staff report

STRUTHERS

Police are investigating car break-ins at 13 locations in the eastern part of the city.

The break-ins all happened Thursday overnight into Friday morning, according to reports.

Struthers Detective Ray Greenwood said there haven’t been any break-ins since.

Police took reports Friday as people woke up to find their car windows had been smashed and their cars ransacked. Some police officers on patrol spotted cars that had smashed windows and alerted the owners.

Possessions stolen included CDs, CD players, change, someone’s Social Security card and driver’s license, and someone’s pain medication.

Car burglaries occurred on Seventh, Elm, Harvey, Ninth, Fourth, Sixth, 10th and Crescent streets; Maplewood Avenue; and Midlothian Boulevard.

At one address on Elm Street, a man told police he heard his car alarm going off at 2:30 a.m. His CD player, some change and a leather jacket were stolen.

Most cars had been parked in driveways or on the streets. But at a Harvey Street address, the burglar entered an unlocked door to a garage and ransacked the car, making off with an iPod.

At apartments on Ninth Street, three vehicles were burglarized.

At the Midlothian Boulevard address, the car owner was returning to his car around 3 a.m. after visiting a friend. He told police he saw a man near his car, and when the man saw him, he left. The car owner discovered a smashed window and a ransacked car.

Greenwood said police don’t have a suspect yet.
