Schedules needed

Athletic directors in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are asked to submit their varsity spring sports schedules to The Vindicator. Schedules can be mailed to Sports Dept., c/o The Vindicator, P.O. Box 780, Youngstown 44501, emailed to sports@vindy.com or faxed to 330-747-6712.

Tolich, Jakovina, Andrews win for Fitch

Kent

Ali Tolich of Austintown Fitch won the weight throw with a distance of 52 feet, 2 inches, at the Kent State High School Open indoor track and field meet.

Tolich was also second in the shot put (42-0). Also, Jen Shiley was second in the 400-meters (58.95 seconds) and the girls 4x200 relay of Theresa Scott, Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Jenna Yacovone was third (1:47.97).

Jay Jakovina won the high jump (6-8) and Waylan Andrews was first in the 400 (50.12).

Canfield’s trio named all-league

CANFIELD

Canfield High senior forward Riley Emery was selected to the first team Blue South of the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League all-star team.

Emery holds school records with 51 goals this season, 125 career goals and 192 career points.

Senior defenseman Joe Geiser and junior goalie Roger Geiser were named second team Blue South.

Also, Joe Geiser was named All-Blue Conference second team. He has 19 goals and 25 assists this season, and has three-year totals of 62 goals and 50 assists.

Roger Geiser has 476 saves this season with an 89 percent save percentage.

Canfield soccer teams cited for academics

CANFIELD

The Canfield High boys and girls varsity soccer teams were recently accorded All-Ohio academic honors by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA) for their classroom performance.

To qualify for this recognition each team attained a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0 while competing on the field.

The boys team finished 16-3 and was district runner-up, while the girls team was 11-5-3.

Both teams are coached by Phil Simone. Joe Fusillo (boys) and Nikki Sorice (girls) are assistants.

Allison Pavlansky wins USTA event

MEDINA

Allison Pavlansky of Canfield won a recent United States Tennis Association tournament, the Paramount Girls Winter Classic.

Competing in the girls 16-year-old division, Pavlansky, the 2010 Vindicator co-Tennis Player of the Year, defeated Katlyn Hissong in the semifinals, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, and Jamie Vizelman in the finals, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.

Conference tournaments

Several regional college basketball teams will play in conference tournaments tonight.

Thiel plays host to Waynesburg, Grove City visits Saint Vincent and Westminster visits Bethany in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s tournament. On the women’s side, Thiel travels to Thomas More and Bethany plays host to Grove City.

Mount Union’s women’s team hosts Otterbein in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, while the men’s team visits John Carroll.

In the North Coast Athletic Conference, Hiram’s women’s team travels to Allegheny, and the men’s team visits Ohio Wesleyan.

Stars selected

Chicago

Three players from the Lincoln Stars were United States Hockey League weekly award winners.

Forward Austin Hervey was named offensive player of the week; defenseman Chris Casto was selected as defensive player of the week; and Kevin Murdock earned honors as the goaltender of the week.

Hervey scored three points (2g, 1a) and posted a plus-three rating to help the Stars win three games in four nights.

His third-period goal proved to be the game-winner as the Stars knocked off league-leading Green Bay 4-3 on Wednesday.
